Fundación Occident announces the 17th edition of the Jesús Serra Poetry Competition

"The admission period for candidates begins today, 28 February, and ends on 25 April."

Fundación Occident, part of GCO, is holding a new edition of the Jesús Serra Poetry Competition. The entries for this competition, which this year celebrates its 17th edition, begins today, 28 February, and will remain open until Thursday 25 April 2024.

The competition aims to promote poetic creation among authors of all ages, and has already become a benchmark for lovers of the genre. Anyone over 10 years of age, regardless of their nationality, can participate in the competition, provided that they submit original and unpublished work in Spanish or Catalan.

The participants will be classified into three categories, which are the same for both languages of the competition: Adults (aged 18 and above), with a prize of €2,500; Youth (between 14 and 17 years of age), with a prize of €1,500; and Children (between 10 and 13 years of age), with a prize of €800.

In addition, since 2020, Fundación Occident has been recognising the poetic careers of writers whose work in Spanish and Catalan has consolidated in our society thanks to the Special Poetry Award. The poets Feliu Formosa (2020), Antonio Colinas (2021), Marta Pessarrodona (2022) and Eloy Sánchez Rosillo (2023) have been
recognised with this prize amounting to €5,000.

In this edition, the jury responsible for selecting the Competition's winning works, as well as the writer who will be recognised with the Special Award, consists of the following members: writer Elena Medel Navarro; writer David Castillo Buïls; writer, translator and professor Ricardo Fernández; poet Carlos Zanón; and professor and
writer Andrea Vallbuena.

The winners of the three categories for each of the two languages, in addition to the Special Award, will be announced in an award ceremony that will be held at Torre Bellesguard in Barcelona on 28 June 2024.

In the words of Ignacio Gallardo-Bravo, Managing Director of Fundación Occident, “the Jesús Serra Poetry Competition is a clear example of our Foundation's commitment towards the arts, and we are proud to see how year after year it has consolidated into a benchmark in the field of poetry”. Along these lines, he assures “since its creation, more than 14,000 people have participated in the competition, and we are extremely proud to bring this literary genre closer to society”.
