'La madre que nos parió' (the mother who gave birth to us), the photographic exhibition that shows us the reality of being a woman in Africa

"The travelling photographic exhibition by Nacho Samper and Nacho Carballo will be inaugurated on 14 September at the Torre Bellesguard tower in Barcelona with the support of Fundación Jesús Serra and Ser Madre Ser Mujer. "

'La madre que nos parió' opens in Barcelona on Thursday 14 September. This travelling photo exhibition documents the work of the NGO 'Ser Madre Ser Mujer' with the collaboration of Fundación Jesús Serra, of GCO (Grupo Catalana Occidente), and thanks to the photographs by Nacho Samper and Nacho Carballo.

The more than 40 photos in the exhibition show the reality of being a woman in Africa and provides a gateway for raising awareness on the situation of women in many developing countries. This Spanish NGO, founded by Spanish physiotherapists and osteopaths Nerea Roldán Galdós, Raquel Pérez Queipo and Ana Ramos Ramírez, with more than 28 people involved in the project, aims to reduce maternal and child mortality, prevent and mitigate complications during childbirth, improving the quality of women's attention and raising awareness on and empowering African girls and women.

Ser Madre, Ser Mujer has counted on the collaboration and funding of Fundación Jesús Serra since 2018 with the intention of giving a response to the obstetrical and gynaecological injuries suffered by many women, every day, in developing countries during pregnancy and childbirth, and which lead to death on many occasions.

"Every day, 830 women between the ages of 13 and 45 die in the world due to complications related to pregnancy, childbirth and postpartum. Most of these deaths could be avoided with better medical services and adequate healthcare. To do this, we need support/collaborators such as Fundación Jesús Serra to help us to raise awareness among society and to provide these developing countries with the resources needed to resolve the current situation", says Nerea Roldán, chairman of Ser Madre Ser Mujer.

"Collaboration with Ser Madre Ser Mujer is essential for us as it has enabled us to materialise the Luisa Farré project, named after the wife of Jesús Serra Santamans, with which we aim to support the improvement of the gynaecological and obstetric conditions of women in developing countries. The work of Ser Madre Ser Mujer is highly professional and very knowledgeable on the reality of Africa and therefore it is necessary to highlight it with this exhibition to make society aware of and help women all over the world", says Ignacio Gallardo-Bravo, director of Fundación Jesús Serra.

The exhibition opens on Thursday 14 September and will run from 15 to 24 September 10:00 to 15:00 at Torre Bellesguard, a modernist building built by Antoni Gaudí on Calle Bellesguard in Barcelona. The GCO insurance group acquired the building in 2018 with the aim of contributing value to society through investing in the conservation and restoration of the tower. The building regularly hosts cultural events of all kinds, as well as daily tourist visits.

The money raised by selling the photographs shown in the photo exhibition will be used for the NGO's projects.
