The artwork “Your city is filled with pianos" ("Play me, I'm yours") will fill the city of Caceres with piano music

"Promoted by the Fundación Jesús Serra and the Maria Canals Competition, the artwork will arrive in Cáceres on 20 May with 8 grand pianos"

Fundación Jesús Serra, belonging to Grupo Catalana Occidente, and the Maria Canals International Music Competition will bring the joy of piano playing to the streets of Cáceres with the artwork “Your city is filled with pianos”. On Friday, 20 May, the artwork will turn some of the most emblematic corners of the city into amazing outdoor music scenarios with the installation of eight grand pianos. The pianos will be installed in iconic locations in the city and will be a pleasant surprise for all visitors to the historic centre and other popular areas.

The pianos will be installed in the Plaza Mayor, el Foro de los Balbos, la Plaza de las Claras, the junction of Calle San Pedro and Donoso Cortés, la Plaza de San Juan, la Plaza Santa María, la Plaza de San Jorge and la Plaza de las Veletas, where the public can enjoy them and share their love of music.

From 11:00 to 20:00, the pianos will be available for professional musicians, students from the conservatoire, dance schools and music schools, children and aficionados, who will turn Cáceres into an enormous open-air music hall. The instruments will include two concert grand pianos, usually only played in large concert halls, which will exceptionally be available to the public for one day to play and enjoy.

The day's highlights can be shared on social media through photos, videos and messages with the hashtag #PianosCaceres.

The “Your city is filled with pianos” artwork invites the public to engage with, activate and take ownership of their urban environment. This is a proposal that arises from Fundación Jesús Serra and the Maria Canals Competition, with the collaboration of the City Council of Cáceres, the Official Conservatory of Music "Hermanos Berzosa" in Cáceres, the Professional Conservatory of Dance in Cáceres, the Music and Performing Arts Foundation in Cáceres (FEMAE) and the Banda Sinfónica de la Diputación Provincial de Cáceres.

The Minister of Culture, Fernanda Valdés, thanked the organisers for having chosen Cáceres to be part of the project. "With this artwork, some of the most emblematic places in the city will be transformed into outdoor music scenarios, where people can share their love of music and the visual arts. Citizens and visitors alike will be able to engage with art within the magnificent setting of Cáceres" she said.

The director of Fundación Jesús Serra, Ignacio Gallardo-Bravo, highlighted the privilege for the city to be chosen as an ideal setting to host the "Your city is filled with pianos" artwork, as Cáceres has been recognised by UNESCO as a World Heritage City. It is undoubtedly the perfect place to stage the artwork, where citizens and visitors will be able to share their love of music, tradition and culture, and where visits to the most emblematic corners of the city will be accompanied by a unique soundtrack".

Jordi Vivancos, Director of the Maria Canals Competition, spoke about the importance of this artwork, and declared it to be "a proud moment for us to be able to offer such a wonderful experience, to engage with music and people, to discover the country's finest talents and at the same time encourage participation in the prestigious Maria Canals International Music Competition".

The close collaboration between Fundación Jesús Serra and the Maria Canals Competition has allowed this cultural activity to take place in several cities such as Barcelona, Madrid, Bilbao, Seville, Cadiz, Malaga, Salamanca, Toledo, Santiago de Compostela, Valencia, Leon, Granada, San Sebastián and Zaragoza. After Cáceres, the artwork will travel to the city of Santander on 10 June and to Madrid on 14 October.
